Mobilising Regions for Growth and Jobs

The maximisation of the quality and effect of the Research and Innovation (R&I) investments is necessary to boost job creation, growth and competitiveness among Europe’s regions. The European Structural and Investment Funds (ESIF) and other EU Programmes support to accomplish this objective by exploiting the possible synergies generated by Horizon 2020.

Entrepreneurial Discovery

The smart specialisation strategy (S3) development at national and regional levels require the mobilisation of actors at all levels to identify all the opportunities of various EU funds and additionally, to discover the potential synergies. The procedure of entrepreneurial discovery, which was used to create these strategies, developed new and close relations between local, regional and national innovation ecosystems and connected citizens, public organisations, academia and business.

Regions of Knowledge and Research Potential

In the European Commission’s (2014) publication entitled “Mobilising Regions for Growth and Jobs: Regions of Knowledge and Research Potential”, the rational for developing connections among the various sources of funding are described as well as how these sources can be combined. Examples are shown of synergies that have emerged at strategic, programming and project implementation levels. This contribution is vital for evidence-based work regarding the European Commission’s strategy for addressing challenges.
