ONLINE S3 shares opinions about smart specialisation! One of the objectives of the European Commission’s Cohesion Policy is to decrease differences among regions and to make sure that Europe has the potential to grow by using Structural Funds. This represents a vital element for the regions to overcome the economic crisis in an effective manner. In this framework, the development of a Research and Innovation strategy for Smart Specialisation (RIS3) is an essential requirement for receive funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
The regions can consult to seek support from the Smart Specialisation Platform (S3P), who assist the regions with developing, implementing and reviewing their RIS3. This platform also provides support in finding niches, strengths, solving challenges, creating innovation partnerships among stakeholders and developing strategies among private and public actors.
Since the action Regional Policy Contributing to Smart Growth in Europe 2020 implemented in 2011, the S3 Platform ¾ a platform created and updated by the JRC’s Growth and Innovation Directorate in Seville ¾ started to offer data, methods, expertise and advice to policymakers across Europe.
The objective of another project called Stairway to Excellence (S2E) is to improve the value of the European Structural and Investment Funds (ESIF) and Horizon 2020 (H2020) by spotting and boosting synergies between the funds simultaneously. ONLINE S3 as a funded HORIZON2020 project aims at supporting beneficiaries of the ESIF to use the funds more effectively and efficiently tailor-made for the region.
