One of the sections of the autumn 2016 edition of Panorama is presenting the “SMART REGIONS CONFERENCE” that took place in Brussels on 1 and 2 June 2016. The aims of the conference were: to showcase successes and recent work; to discuss the best way forward to accelerate the implementation of smart specialisation strategies; and to put concrete support in place for future work together. In addition, thematic smart specialisation platforms for energy, agro-food, and industrial modernisation were launched.
In her prologue of the issue, Ana-Paula Laissy Head of Communication Unit, Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy, mentions that the main feature in the issue looks at the EU Urban Agenda, as established by the Amsterdam Pact agreed during the summer. Articles included in the edition examine how it plans to improve life for city dwellers across the EU. A look at how the Commission’s new package of measures to promote the circular economy will help reduce waste and encourage sustainability, is also included. In addition, developments in smart specialisation strategies are presented, while the ‘In Your Own Words’ section gives the floor to stakeholders from Finland, France, Germany, Portugal and Sweden.
