Smart Specialisation and Europe’s growth agenda

Smart Specialisation and Europe’s growth agenda

Smart specialisation is considered a strategic approach toward economic development by targeting Research and Innovation (R&I) actions. Every region, strong or weak, high-tech or low-tech, undergoes a transformative procedure that includes creating a concept for growth, finding the regions’ competitive advantages, defining strategic priorities, and applying smart policies and activities. The so-called “Research and Innovation Strategies for Smart Specialisation” (RIS3) represent the fundament for future investments supported by the European Structural and Investment Funds (ESIF).

Europe’s investment agenda

The aim of Europe’s investment agenda – which is vital to realize growth and competitiveness – is to create impact on growth during a cooperative effort between authorities, stakeholders and the private sector. To be successful in terms of returns on investments, the regions’ strengths and potential must be exploited. Therefore, smart specialisation strategies embody an effective and efficient pathway toward this direction. In this framework, Online S3 aims at supporting these objectives.
